Peer Support

Will it help if I talk to other people with the same lung condition?

Many people with long-term illnesses, including lung conditions, find it helps to talk to others who are in the same situation. This is sometimes called “peer support”. Sharing experiences with others who understand exactly what you are going through can help you feel less alone and improve your emotional wellbeing, in addition you learn more about your condition and how others manage their symptoms. These groups can also be a great way to socialise in a safe environment.

How do I find other people with the same lung condition to talk to?

Asthma + Lung UK runs Breathe Easy support groups and singing classes up and down the country, which are open to anyone with a lung condition. These groups meet regularly either face to face or online. To find a group near you click here. Asthma + Lung UK also offers support for people who are caring for someone with a lung condition.

Social media is another popular way of connecting with others who have long-term illnesses and lung conditions and can be particularly useful for people with rare diseases to find one another. If you type the name of your lung condition in the search bar of social media platforms (such as Facebook and Instagram), you will find different accounts and groups- this may be able to connect you with others who have the same condition or a similar condition to you.
You can also take a look at our Community pages where people with lung conditions in our region share their questions, advice and experiences.
